Probably pretty much impossible Im Not The Hero You Wanted Im The Monster You Needed shirt. The key to an AC30 tone is the way the power section compresses. They hit max volume with the volume setting just below 12-o-clock and then they compress more and more and get that growly quasi-driven sound that we all know and love. I don’t believe that is something the Katana is able to do from my brief time with it. Just a word of warning – to get an AC30 to sound like that you need to crank it and that means volumes that will blow your eardrums out in a small room. Those things are LOUD – to the point that you could probably not hear yourself yell your lungs out over it. The whole sound comes from power-tube saturation so there is no possible way to get that sound at low volumes without some kind of load-box system in place.
There is not a world of difference in volume between the two, to be honest Im Not The Hero You Wanted Im The Monster You Needed shirt. They have very little headroom in the power tubes so they hit peak quite fast and then start compressing. It’s more a voicing difference. If tube amps are really what you want to use for that power stage distortion (and I get you, I love that sound too and use it all the time) then working toward a power soak is really where you want to be aiming for. I moved to this set up a while back and I love it. Being able to crank my amp at 2 am and yet play via headphones feels unreal. It’s not cheap but it’s not crazy expensive either and a good investment. It’s a great amp no question. Just gotta be practical about how you are actually going to get it working for you. Else it’s like purchasing a Ferrari and only driving it at 5mph along your own driveway.
